SRA New Focus
Transforming the regulation of legal services
- have your say.
The Solicitors Regulation Authority
(SRA) is transforming its approach to regulation for the benefit of
consumers. It intends to set, promote & secure, in the public
interest, standards of behaviour and professional performance
necessary to ensure that clients receive a good service and that
the rule of law is upheld.
The intention is to foster a flexible
and innovative market for legal services, combining improved access
to justice with assured standards. For that reason, the SRA will
pursue outcomes focused regulation (OFR) to be introduced at the
same time as the framework permitting alternative business
structures (ABSs) in October 2011.
OFR will concentrate on the quality of
outcomes for clients while allowing firms to show
compliance in ways best suited to their businesses.
This transformation will involve changing the way the SRA delivers
its regulatory objectives, changing the relationship legal service
providers have with the SRA, and further development of SRA staff
skills and competencies.
The SRA are currently consulting on
this new approach and the consultation closes on 27 July 2010. For
