Apply for Lexcel
Who can apply for Lexcel?
The Lexcel accreditation is suitable for any legal practice,
regardless of size or type of work - including in-house, local
government and sole practitioners. The standards used are flexible,
simply identifying the areas that must to be covered, but leaving
practices free to choose the most appropriate procedures for their
circumstances.
How do I apply for Lexcel assessment?
There are 3 steps to applying for Lexcel:
- Check that your practice meets the Lexcel requirements by
completing a self assessment
- Contact us - your assessment body
- Submit your application to the Law Society
1. Self assessment
It is likely that your practice will already meet a number of
the Lexcel requirements, especially if you have other quality
standards in place, such as ISO 9001 the SQM (Specialist Quality Mark) from the Legal
Services Commission or even Investors in People.

2. Assessment Body
Here at Assessment North East, we have been working with Lexcel
for over 14 years. We are a Lexcel Assessment Body, licensed to
deliver assessments and consultancy on a national basis. Once you
have completed your self assessment checklist, please contact us and we
can help you take your application forward. We will even review
your self assessment checklist for you free of charge.
3. Application to Law Society
Prior to assessment, it is essential that each practice complete
the Law Society Application form and submit this to the Lexcel
Office at the Law Society at least 4 weeks prior to the assessment
date.
The following information must be included in your
application:
- Staff List
- Indemnity Insurance Record
- Conduct and disciplinary details (if applicable)
Please note: the Law Society will provide us with a copy of your
application form so there is no need to send a copy to us.
